Canadian Temporary Work Permits:
Canada issues over 90,000 foreign worker visas per year and allows them to enter Canadafor temporary work in order to help
Canadian employers address labour shortages.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) issues the work permits, however Service Canada ensures that these workers will
support economic growth in Canada and are needed by the employers. Together Service Canada and CIC ensures that
Canadaian labour market does not face labour shortages and always has the finest workers.
However, you as the applicant must demonstrate to the Canadian Visa Office that you have sufficient ties to your country of
residence and you will return on the expiry of your work permit. Applicants are able to extend their work permits as long as the
employer can satisfy Service Canada and CIC that there is a need for your services.
There are many benefits to applying for a work permit;
- The work permit can be extended
- The worker can apply for permanent residence under skilled worker or provincial nominee program as long as they
have an indeterminate job letter from an employer and are legally residing in Canada. To see if you qualify please fill
out our free skilled worker assessment form.
- The workers in some cases come to Canada in less than 6 months.
- Spouses and dependant can accompany the worker.
- Spouses can receive an open work permit and children can attend secondary school without study permit. (Only if the
worker has been in Canada for 6 months or longer)
This is a three step process;
- An employer must first offer you a job.
- Service Canada must normally provide a labour market opinion or "confirmation" of your job offer. However, some types
of work are exempt from this process.
- After Service Canada confirms that a foreign national may fill the job, you can then apply to CIC for your work permit.
