Adoptions:

About 2,000 foreign children are adopted by Canadian citizens and permanent residents every year. These children are given
high priority in the immigration process.

Many parents who wish to adopt from a foreign country do not realize that foreign adoption is a lengthy and sometimes difficult
process:
  • There are international laws which vary from country to country. It is up to the adopting parent to ensure that all
adoption, rituals and legal paperwork is appropriately completed.
  • A genuine parent-child relationship must be created as a result of the adoption.

The first part of this process is that the parent must be
eligible to sponsor. The following requirements must be met to be
eligible to sponsor;
  • Persons eligible to sponsor adopted children or children intended for
adoption in Canada must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents,
aged 18 or over, and living in Canada; and
  • The sponsor must also receive a certificate of approval from the province in which they reside.

Who is eligible for sponsorship?

There are two types of adoption cases.

  • Children Adopted Outside Canada
According to Canadian laws children may be sponsored to come to Canada if they are under 22 years of age at the time of the
sponsorship application. However, the parent must also fulfill the laws and requirements of the country from which they are
adopting,

Note: The age of adoption may vary from country to country.

  • Children Adopted in Canada
A child may also be sponsored as an intended adoptee to be adopted in Canada, if he or she is under 18 years of age at the
time of the sponsorship application.
